Converging with Other Emerging Media

Convergence does not necessarily only pertain to three forms of media, broadcast, print, and online, there are many new ways of how people get their news.

Something that remains important through delivering the news is “looking at the dimensions of of each story and how the story can best be communicated through each medium.”

With convergent journalism being so new, there is not one right or wrong way to report the news; just seeing which works best for any particular story and applying it that way.

RSS, which is short for, “really simple syndication” or “rich site summary” is a tool that users who have selected to receive content from a certain place will push that content to them.  RSS has two factors: “an RSS reader either online or as software on a user’s computer and a Web site that indexes content when it is updated.”

Email notification is another way to for users to get their news.  With email the news provider can decide length and type of news story to provide to the reader.

A question that is posed with email delivering news is timing, breaking news should be delivered as quickly as possible and email is not always the fastest way. Email has a few other problems, as well, including spam but readers can always opt out of receiving emails from that organization.

Text messaging, another way to deliver the news, is also sometime referred to as SMS, short-message system, and is mostly limited to 160 characters or less.  Text messaging is used by many, especially younger generations who rely on their cell phones for news updates.

Delivering the news via text message is extremely fast and almost any newsroom can set up a computer to send out text alerts when breaking news happens.

Billboards and RBDS, radio broadcast data service, are other ways of delivering news and like online and text messaging they have their pros and cons.  Billboards depend on traffic flow and location but can also be distracting to a driver.

RBDS can be heard from many viewers and is transmitted along with music and talk and can be transmitted all day and night, as the radio is always on.  The broadcast will always must just talking, never including images and graphics.

With the beginning of this convergent journalism, newsrooms will have to learn what works best for them and how to deliver their news.  There are certain factors that will newsrooms will have to take into consideration but as long as they think about who, what and how they are going to tell the story.

Adding (Multi) Media to the Web

With today’s technologies, nothing seems to be impossible on the web. People are becoming more and more involved with reporting the way they see the news and more involved in the news that they read.

Interactive news is what involves multimedia, which could include sound, text, video, etc. and it could be what keeps the reader hooked on your story or site that extra couple of sentences.

There are around 6 categories of media that are now becoming related to the Internet: “still images, sounds, moving images, animations and graphics, and interactives.”

Still images involve phones and cameras which are huge factor in the newsroom and in delivering events. With photo galleries becoming more evident online, viewers can now look through sets of photos a reporter or photographer may have taken. Anyone can snap a photo but there is a certain level of skill that has to come with being a good photo journalist.

Most images need to be edited before being posted online and that is why photographers will crop, size and save it as a .jpg or .jpeg, often using Photoshop or iPhoto.

With visual having such a large impact on how we read and report news, sounds is often left out as being important. “There are three general categories of aural material: music, speech, and sounds (sound effects).”

Sound in journalism is most often used when creating a sound bite. Sounds bites involve quotes and key parts of news stories. Sometimes soundbites will involve clips from significant events or more important parts of the news story.

Podcasting is something that has become very popular when compared to blogging or self-publishing. Before you begin podcasting though, as a writer remember these 6 general rules: “have something to say, decide how long it should be, record your interviews as needed, gather your other production elements, assemble the podcast using your editing software, and plan a regular schedule.”

In video, if your are posting compelling video people are going to want to tune in no many what. As a multimedia journalist, though, you need to remember that readers have a “limited attention span” and are viewing the content on a smaller computer screen so your shots are going to need to be filmed differently.

The same goes for graphics, readers need to be able to see what you are posting and since the screen is smaller you will need to modify your postings.

Interactives allow your reader to be involved in the news that is being posted, like links or polls. These should be used on your website to keep readers attached to your postings.

Media is ready to be used online in many different ways and combinations, now all we have to do as reporters is learn how to make this work best for our targeted group.

Repurposing Content

“Repurposing stories is both good for journalism and good for business,” which proves to the producer that people want to see their news or hear it on multiple platforms.

Viewers and readers want to be able to get their news when they want it and they are not always able to tune into the 5 o’clock news or nightly news.  People need to be able to catch their news when they can and this is where they online news world becomes so important. This allows the viewer to interact and be able to catch all forms of the news with just a couple clicks of a mouse.

Trumping Obama

Your vote counts. At least at my blog it does.

Donald Trump has the money and the plans to potentially repair the country. Do you believe that he can really do it? He thinks he can, and he has the business background and knowledge to back it up. Obama has spoken for three years now about “change” and the country is still suffering, I mean look at our gas prices! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but let me know what yours is!

Skills of Today’s Journalist

Being a “Jack of all Trades” is not just a phrase anymore but a necessity for the emerging journalist.  Across both articles and according to Mark Briggs in Journalism Next, new and old journalists need to have all the skills they can when becoming a professional journalist.

One skill that seemed almost mandatory would be to know how to work across multi-platforms, a journalist would need to have experience in all types of multimedia such as video, audio, writing, photo, etc.  Although, the journalist would also need to be able to incorporate the main skills that it takes to be a successful journalist; they would have to know how make a good balance between both while reporting and doing their job.
